From Stories to Salvation: Making the Bible Come Alive to Kids

I grew up in church.  I've went to Sunday School for as long as I can remember.  I knew that every answer to every question was going to be Jesus or God---at least I had a great chance that those would be correct answers.

But how do you make the Bible COME ALIVE to kids?  How do we reach kids to realize the Bible is more than just STORIES but it is the actual Word of a Holy God?

1.  Remember that everything points to Christ, especially remember this when teaching from the Old Testament.  The Old Testament is often taught to kids as a collection of stories to recall.  They are taught about Joseph with his multicolored coat, David defeating Goliath, along with Moses parting the Red Sea.  But so many of those people were a picture of Christ---they saved their people, yet they were flawed in their humanness so they were an incomplete picture of Christ.  Only Christ could save the people from their sins and do so with perfect sinlessness.  They pointed to the Redeemer.  Too many times, children's lessons focus on teaching stories and not showcasing the Gospel that is within those stories.

2. Make a real life application.  Are you teaching about Samuel thinking that Eli was calling him when actually it was God and he mistook God's voice for Eli's? Too many times, this is taught as just a quick story to remember Samuel by--but take it a step further and really talk to the kids about how we can mistake God's voice in our own lives.  Do we listen to social media more than God?  Do we listen to our friends and the opinions of others more than God?  Kids can think deeper than we often give them credit for---so don't leave your lessons "surface level," but dig deeper into real life application with your kids.

3.  Seek God for guidance on how to approach His Holy Word with these children.  The Book of James tells us, "If anyone lacks wisdom he ought to ask God who gives to all generously..."  Ask God for wisdom on how to teach these children the truths of Scripture!  He will reveal what they need to learn.  Trust Him to guide your lessons.

Praying for you as you undertake this awesome responsibility of teaching the Bible to children!!!
