Math Free Activity Idea: Cake Walk!

Do you remember the cake walk at the carnival as a child?  The music would play, you would walk....the music would stop, you would stop, and someone gets a cake?!

In this activity, students move to the music and stop to work as a team to answer math problems.

In the picture, they are moving around fractions.  When the music stops, I call out a fraction and everyone raises their hand if they are standing at a fraction that is equivalent to the one called out. The team who gets all answers correct (they have the hands up that should be up, they have the hands down that should be down because they are not equivalent), they get 10 points for their team!

I usually have my class split into 2 teams (12-13 kids per team) and I make sure to have at least 13 fractions on the floor for them to walk around.

This can be done with equivalent fractions, classifying polygons (draw the polygon on your board and have words on the ground that can match polygons), and more!  My students ADORE our "Math Cake Walk" even though we don't get cake!  It's so fun, they forget that cake used to be involved in this! :)
